Shane Albahrani to be the 2017 Grand Marshal

Harlan Days is proud to announce that Shane Albahrani will be the Grand Marshal for this year’s grand parade! He started sharing the microphone on Komets’ broadcasts with the legendary Bob Chase in 2013. Shane took over full time play-by-play in 2016 after the passing of Bob Chase. Shane’s mother grew up in Harlan and was a member of the last class to graduate from Harlan High School in 1965. His grandparents, Bob and Lillian (nee: Lake), continued to live in Harlan until they passed away in 1998 and 2003 respectively, so needless to say Shane spent a lot of summer days and weekends hanging out in Harlan! Both of his grandparents and his sister are buried in the Harlan cemetery. Shane is a Fort Wayne native. He and his wife, Kathi, have one daughter named Riley and two dogs named Maisy and Harley. He graduated from both Northrop High School and IPFW. His 25th high school reunion is coincidently on the same day he is set to be our Grand Marshal and we are glad he still chose to be part of the 70th anniversary Harlan Days celebration! Shane first started calling high school hockey games on public access TV when he was just seventeen years old, and continued to call games from 1991-2000. His first job in radio was doing overnights on WFWI in 1995 and then started doing the video for the Komets in 1997. The upcoming Komets season will be his 20th year with the team. Shane’s daughter Riley now handles video for the Komets! He spent three summers in the media department of Major...

Marquita Hertig & Floyd Fogle Named 2017 Honorary Citizens

Marquita Hertig says she is happy to have been a Harlan citizen most of her life. She graduated from Harlan High School and Indiana University. She married her high school sweetheart, Don, and will celebrate 60 years together in September. They raised two children, Ric and Kim, in Harlan and they now have five grandsons and six great grandchildren. She is delighted to be watching a fourth generation of Hertigs play ball at the Harlan Park. She and Don bought and restored at least six Harlan homes or businesses over the years, the last and most challenging being the 1800’s IOOF building now privately owned and still standing in the middle of town. She owned Mardon Real Estate in the 1970’s and worked out of the original Standard Service Station “on the point”. She is the Harlan United Methodist Church Historian, loves family, traveling, history, flower gardening, and volunteering. Her most recent endeavor and accomplishment was writing the Harlan History Book, “Now and Then” which has sold over 600 copies and allowed her “team” to give back to Harlan Park. Floyd Fogle was born and raised on the Fogle family farm to Raymond and Clara Fogle. The original farm house still stands on Spencerville Road across from the Harlan Christian Youth Center. Traditionally, the Fogles have always been big Harlan Days volunteers and Floyd is no exception. For many years he was the chairman of the Harlan Days car show. Old cars are still one of his hobbies, volunteering along with keeping scrapbooks and photos of old Harlan events is another. Floyd can often be found helping at the...
